Lost and Found

I went to dbl O (nice website with horrible graphics btw) for the first time today. It was alright, I didn’t like the music..it was retro night with a bit of RNB which I don’t dig.

Well good place to laugh at drunk people/get drunk since the drinks are cheap. There was a girl wailing and puking at the toilet over a boy..as in she was crying about a boy.

I saw Oliver Jeffers featured on It’s Nice That the other day and went to check his website out. He’s is a really talented illustrator and painter. He is famous for his children picture books. I saw them on his website and immediately fell in love with them. I have to get them.

They were quite expensive to get online so I decided to try Borders or Kino. Surprisingly (ok actually not surprisingly cos Kino does carry a lot of books), Kino has majority of his book. And I decided to get this one:

It’s about a penguin that turns up at a little boy’s door one so he decided to bring the penguin home.

It’s such a heartwarming story and uber cute! I finish reading the book in minutes but it’s all worth it, beautiful paintings and such innocence in the way he writes. I am definitely going to get another of his book.

I like what I like. And what I mean is, if you know me well enough, I like to collect toys miniature things and things with a lot of details. So, I like what I like if it makes sense because it makes me feel like a kid forever. It kind of suits me as well, me being small physically you know…

I decided a couple of months ago I would invest on a design/art book monthly. I started off with a layout book, this is the second one. I almost forgot how it feels when i get a new book..the smell, the texture, colours, woohoo! Gives me the high…

Great ads

Sally · Wednesday, November 26th, 2008, 11:22 pm · Comments (0)

I used to get kind of annoyed/useless when everyone around me surfs art/design sites and wowing at all the great pieces when I was in school. Annoyed because why is every conversation centered around some great designer or photographer. Useless because I have no idea what or who they are talking and that makes me feel that I am not as passionate into design as them or I am not as good.

Now that I am working as a graphic designer, it seem it doesn’t matter anymore. Obviously, doesn’t matter one, because it has passed and two, no matter how many sites you go to, if you suck..yes you suck.

It is only now, that I am done with school, in a job and desperately need to learn more and get inspiration, I start surfing all these sites. They are great nevertheless and just damn inspirational (with many chunks of jealousy).

Right up till I am in my current job (which is in advertising), I never look much into advertising. I never took the module in school, never thought much about a career in advertising. Not because I am not interested but just…I always think I am just not witty enough for it..which I think I still am not. But I realised everything is kind of like advertising, we sell something some sort or the other so there’s no escaping.

So that pushes me to be much more observant to all sorts of advertisements..study them and be truly amused. So this is one of the series of ads I saw today that I think is just brilliant beyond amazing.

So yes, I can say I feel more arty/art-knowledged nowadays with all the arts and design sites everyday.

The post wasn’t meant to be so long, just wanted to say “amazing ad, take a look” and that’s it. I just need to rant/make noise on your screen, to let off all the talking I can’t do at work.

The big and small of life

This is truely the most heartbreaking photo I have ever seen. Quoting the photo caption directly:

“In this Nov. 6, 2008 file photo, young Protegee carries her niece, Response, as she looks for her parents in the village Kiwanja, 90 kms north of Goma, eastern Congo. When photographed on Nov. 6, Protegee was in a crowd of thousands in the town of Kiwanja, having walked for three days by herself after being separated from her mother as they fled on foot from her town about 12 miles (20 kilometers) away. Protegee finally found her mother, Esperance Nirakagori, in Kiwanja at a makeshift refugee camp six days after they were separated.”

It brings me to think about many things that are beyond our imagination or knowledge. Another side of the world that’s so dark and lonely we refuse to think about it.

On the lighter side of life, a cute little photo essay of a cotton tail bunny:

I am quite addicted to Issuu nowadays. It’s a site where users published their magazine/publication online. Alot of really great stuff there.

Added this storage pockets on my wall to hold my accessories. My necklaces always get tangled up together. Nice addition to the empty wall behind my door as well.

The weekend is over. What can I say? That sucks.

I am frustrated. I am frustrated over why it gets so frustrating. Why I get so frustrating?

Pictures from work

Sally · Thursday, October 30th, 2008, 12:04 am · Comments (1)

I need to get to sleep soon. Here’s some pictures from work:

I can’t work without little toys around, I can’t have a bare desk. So here’s two animals wooden pegs clipped to my keyboard wire from my sister, little family figurines my mother loves, cow note holder from Shups, treasure chest full of sweets and snacks from Audrey B. and that red thing is a digital clock that doesn’t get knock down (you know those with the weight thing at the bottom?) from father.

Little elephant toy from Song, it’s the only item that moves around the desk. Sometimes the baby figurine sits on the elephant.

These are all little toy keychains that is too nice to be used as a keychains and too wasted to be kept in my cupboard so it goes onto the wall. The little brown thing which is a bear is from Noel - Noel the SM at SB-CH (haha, secret code).

Cute and handy blue drawer that was thrown out by next door neighbour. It looks at like a big lego piece.

A sorta first ad I participate in that appeared on newspaper. ‘Participate’ because I didn’t do the whole ad, just the re-laying out bit - mostly the adding of my favourite ‘Georgia’ font! Always delighting to have your work published, no matter how little or much in this case.

Third interview

Sally · Saturday, September 27th, 2008, 3:03 pm · Comments (1)

I took MC from work the other day and decided to do something, I have been wanting to draw and paint so yes I did.

I drew a couple of items and most was not impressive, my pear looks like..lines. Then I drew an apple as taught by the guidebook and here it is:

And my apple looked more like a pumpkin and well..er, it’s getting there. I drew an onion after that, it does look a decent onion, it was confirmed by my mother.

The other day went looking on the web for jobs again, I got really tired of it. I got so irritated with being so desperate yet I don’t want to give in to working in a print shop. I scrap the cover letter template I made. It became such a routine so I sent out a cover letter that reads:

I am a fresh graduate from Temasek Polytechnic Design School with a Diploma in Visual Communication. I saw your ad looking for a graphic designer with experience which I do not have but I would like to send in my CV and portfolio anyway to give it a shot because I don’t think I have anything to lose except you might never want to hire me in the future.
I really need a job and I am tired of writing unimpressive and boring cover letters. I do not have a winning portfolio and there are many many more talented people than me however, I am definitely one of the more hardworking, responsible, detailed  and willing to learn people around.
If you would not like to hire me to be a graphic designer in your company, I am still keen on being a personal assistant, coffee girl, cleaner or intern.
Attached is my portfolio and CV, I would be available for interview anytime.
I am really sorry if I wasted your time and energy reading this. I really sincerely apologise in advance.
Thank you!

I am sure I wasn’t thinking right. But that’s ok, it was fun.

And I got an interview..no, not from the above company I send the cover letter to, another company that I send a decent simple, cover letter to. I said I was keen on an intern position too so maybe it’s for an intern position.

My domain is expiring soon and I need a new name. Suggestions?

When there’s nothing much to post and I want to seeing this instead of the last post

Father’s birthday

Sally · Sunday, September 7th, 2008, 11:40 pm · Comments (1)

It was father’s birthday yesterday but we celebrated it today.

My father don’t fancy big celebrations of expensive dinners or presents so it was just strawberry cheesecake and a cycling trip to the nearby fish farm and plant farm.

It was about time my Morning Glories seedlings get a new home.

I made that little device out of chopsticks. It looks like a nice little home for flowers or tomatoes.

Everyone loves my phone because it looks so pretty. I want to love it too but it’s so lacky and difficult to use I feel like stomping on the phone and make sure none of that touch-screen is functioning.

I miss buttons. I can’t message while walking. I can’t message with one hand.

I watched ‘Babel’ today. Awesome, awesome movie. It reminds me very much of ‘Crash’. One of those film reminding us how cruel, lonely and sometimes how aimless we are on planet earth. It makes me think about the world as whole, take a step back and see even if our own little world is perfect, the universe as a whole isn’t.

So many times I tell myself, if life is just about living for the sake of living and aimless at the end of this life, I rather don’t live it. There’s so much crazy shit so why bother to bear with it without a lesson at the end of it?

So life is without a purpose is..just not worth living.
